Went "sport fishing" by accident.
I stopped by a local garden center the other day. They were selling a bunch of Sum and Substance. One was dark centered with a gold edge. Could be a clone for Sum of All or Titanic.
I knew it looked like one in my garden and matched it with Sum of All. Then I wandered around in my garden and saw the similarity to Titanic also. (I forgot that Titanic is a sport of S&S.)Ed McHugh, Sicklerville NJ

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
looks good Ed... and should grow faster than S&S. Margin looks pretty wide and pretty even, something the first sports were uneven on...
I think you should name it. Everybody else has
Let's see... I have a couple each of Lady Isobel Barnett and Titanic and Sum it Up... and a Sum Total
Other green with yellow that people felt they had to name
American Idol
Beauty Substance
Bottom Line
Buckeye
Corona (like that name!)
oh, heck... I'm tired of typing... at least 9 more...
I found Titanic to be far to variable in the quality of the margins... some wide, some with no margins, some streaking but not reliable... and it doesn't grow nearly as well as LIB etc.
So what the heck -name it. Maybe it is the perfect one... the best... the Ultimate Sum (great name for marketing in a crowded field - works better than Better Than Sum...

I could wait 10 years and see what differences show up.
I have a Lady Isobel Barnett around here somewhere - I need to check that also.
How about "Sumthing or Other".
I do have Bottom Line but it's too whimpy to compare.

Nice looking hosta. I never find anything like that. Tho last year I found a streaked Candy Dish. Split it up and the streaky part came back this year still streaky. Cant wait to see how it looks in a couple years.
Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
Ok, Linda... Striped Candy is a pretty cool thing! I'd try to collect seed from that baby!

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
I hope it flowers this year but its pretty small. A total of 4 eyes and I cant tell with the frost damage if there is more than one streaked. Well at least one is. I took off the streaked eye last year before I planted it but it came up with 3 eyes and I can only be sure of one eye. I am keeping it watered in this heat. Only time will tell and I keep my fingers crossed.
Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
"Better Than Sum", "Sumthing or Other"...you guys just crack me up!
Linda, that's a great find! Candy Dish puts out some really nice seedlings, and a streaked one
would add a lot more to the pot! Hope it stays streaked for you! I'd sure be growing any seeds it produced!

Just an update after a few months:
I just noticed that there may be some differences in the pieces of this plant. There are three sprouts and those really streaky leaves may only be on one sprout.

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
It looks like the streaker wants to stabilize to the light-margin, dark center form. If you want to keep the streaker, you'll want to divide it now - or wait until next year and hope there is still a streaked eye or two to separate. I like both forms, so I'd try to grow both... sort of like Blizzard and Winter Snow. I have to cut up the Blizzard regularly to prevent it all stabilizing to Winter Snow...

I did split this up in early October:

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
Just an update on these two. They look the same now. And both look like Sum of All.
Here is the one that had the most variability: Here is the second piece from the original pot: I also just noticed another large potted S&S is starting to show a lighter edge or maybe the center is starting to darken.

Noticed this one this morning. It's hiding the other one under it.
Here is the other one that was buried between the first one and a Lady Isobel Barnett.

Nice find!
Every time I think I have found a sport, it turns out to be another Frances Williams.

Well my streaked Candy Dish didn't make it through the winter.

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
At least I have a streaked seedling from Swoosh to play with. Its only 2 leaves so far. Its not happy with the cool weather we have been having.
Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
Update on these:
The one in my New Garden space. And the one still in a pot.

Re: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
These S&S sports are fun, I found this one last year, my first ever, this is it last year.
And this year, still coming out.
DenisRe: Went "sport fishing" by accident.
Here is a follow-up on these two sports - they are named Romulus and Remus. Remus went into my side garden a couple of years ago (the garden a tree fell on). Romulus went into my "named" theme garden last season.
Here is Romulas in the garden. That's Bobbie Sue in front. Here is Remus in my side garden - its leaves aren't as large as last season.
